It is with this shift that the speculative (that is, embodied, relational, more-than-human or cybernetic approaches) comes to the fore: rather than reproducing the Western self-understanding of knowledge as abstract theorising, ways of producing knowledge are understood to be materially embodied: the ‘geo- and body-politics of knowing and sensing’ is thus argued to be ‘foundational in decolonial thinking’ (Mignolo, 2011: 203). This is without doubt a radical disavowal of the modern Western episteme; one which puts phenomenological limits to knowledge claims as merely projections of one’s own embodied being onto the world. Key to the pluralising framing of the pluralist project is that the problem is constructed as one of phenomenology, the way in which the world appears and is experienced through interactive practice or world-making of the subject. Thus, beyond the limits of modernity, other worlds sit alongside in an ‘ecology of knowledges’ (de Sousa Santos, 2016: 111; Rojas, 2016: 380).
